Edinburgh International Book Festival | 9-25 Aug 2008
It might be one of the smaller and less well known aspects of the festival season, but the Edinburgh International Book Festival is still the biggest festival of its type in the world.
With Charlotte Square Gardens transformed into a village made up of tents and stalls, the EBF has a bohemian feel but still attracts the big names with some the world’s top writers taking part, among them Hanif Kureshi, Steven Berkoff, Blur’s Alex James, Tariq Ali, Tony Parsons and Will Self, to name just a few.
Children and families are very much at the heart of this event, with numerous events aimed at the younger generation. There’s an activity corner, events for babies and under 3s, daily storytellers for adults and children, events especially aimed at teens, and lashings and lashings of ice-cream
Visitors to the festival are encouraged to take part in the events with question and answer sessions and discussion forums open to all comers. And if you feel inspired by the amazing talents on show here, there are plenty of opportunities to buy from a broad range of books, not only by the authors taking part but others too, with proceeds going straight back in to the festival - the highlight of any book lovers calendar, not only providing further insight in to well known and loved works but also introducing readers to new and unusual authors.
