Bang On! present The Joy Of Junk@The Market House, Kingston, July 26 2007
review
The world premiere of The Joy Of Junk – the new show from London-based energetic percussion duo, Bang On! – was held atKingston ’s Market House to an enthusiastic crowd of young and old. The high octane preview show kicked off a UK tour which will end up with band members, Dave Smith and Katie Stephenson, taking their eclectic mix of funky banging beats to a festival audience in Edinburgh .
Bang On! – who use an enormous home-made drum kit made from everyday junk, wood and metal – have been playing together for five years, and deliver an remarkable performance, which not only showcases their impressive techniques and ears for superb rhythm, but involves the audience to create a great rousing ‘junk’ orchestra.
Katie and Dave, both graduates of Brunel University music department, where they met, use a mixture of unusual instruments including pots and pans, dustbin lids, wheelie bins, a cheese grater, rakes, wooden chairs (not to mention the plastic bottles full of rice, used as shakers) and who knew a carrier bag could create such a unique sound? Whether it be banging away free-handed or working some magic with their improvised drum sticks, their pure skill, combined with working the crowd to full effect, results in an outstanding and interesting show.
The Joy of Junk is a real treat. The duo’s supreme energy and obvious enjoyment is infectious and the show is well-paced and planned out, so the audience is engaged at all times with rhythmic number after number. The sheer amount of everyday objects Bang On! use to great musical effect – including one amusing section involving vacuum cleaner and a hairdryer – is to be admired. And during the audience participation piece, I admit I took great delight in banging away on the old grill tray I was handed!
Bang On! returns to Edinburgh Festival this year, not only with this all-new 50 minute show, but with a run of Bang On! workshops for those keen to really get hands on with The Joy of Junk.
This is thoroughly unique, top-tapping, bin-banging, stick-tapping fun and, whether it’s inNorwich , Cambridge or the month-long run in Edinburgh , for fans of seriously funky beats, Bang On! offers a complete visual and audio experience not to be missed.
